A New Batch of Panini Dream Team Autographs Listed

Just as these have started to completely dry up and see some crazy prices, a Las Vegas base seller listed one of each Panini Hall Of Fame Dream Team Autos for sale via auction format.  Some of them are getting out of hand early, but others are still sitting low.

If you have any thoughts of buying your favorite Dream Team player or want to make the set, this is your chance.  That holiday money should help your wallet feel a little better after it’s all said and done.

Clyde Drexler

Scottie Pippen

Magic Johnson

John Stockton

It should be noted that we have still not seen a single copy of these players.  I’m starting to think they never were produced, but Panini hasn’t disclosed any info.

Do You Believe In Magic Numbers?

Over the years, the hobby has reacted to some strange things on cardboard.  Dead Bugs.  Game used foul pole netting. Game Used Dirt.  On-Card Autos (They touched the card!!!).  Historical DNA pieces.

Perhaps the biggest stigma in the hobby is that specific serial numbers in a print run sell for more money.  Many believe that the first and last always command a premium.  Others think that’s pure crap and only the depicted player’s jersey number commands a premium.

I’m happy to announce that the jersey number theory is clrealy alive and well.

We brought you some market info on the Panini Hall Of Fame Dream Team Autos, which have been the hottest basketball singles of the year.  They regularly command $200-$400+ depending on the player, but these two auctions are just plain insane.

Scottie Pippen Dream Team Autograph #’d 8/49

Clyde Drexler Dream Team Autpograph #’d 10/49

If you were looking for more of these sweet autographs for your collection, these are the only ones listed at the moment.  With the low print runs, good luck finding them next year.  I’m sure many of these will be locked away in personal collections.

Imagine If Card Companies Actually Had Some Originality…

If there was one sport that I wish I knew more about, it’s hockey.  I don’t particularly like the game, nor do I truly understand the nuances and scoring, but from a hobby aspect it’s lovely.  Limited products come out every year and the rookies sell for amounts that would make Jim Cramer scream “BUY!”.  It always seems like a no-brainer to buy some product or singles, but I always get cold feet.  Call me a wimp.

Well, I came across this Pat LaFontaine ring auction the other day in my daily USA searches and it got me thinking.  Why don’t card companies buy cool memorabilia like this and insert it into products?  It would be an interesting redemption chase set idea to be the lucky owner of a real championship ring.

Surely, the product would have to be higher end and they would have to get a hold of a bunch of relevant rings, but it would still be interesting. Maybe insert redemption cards for some gold medals from tournaments, or actual MVP/ROY/CY YOUNG awards that were bought through auctions. The possibilities are endless if some thought was put into this idea.

While I sit here and watch the boring 2010 Bowman Chrome Baseball market, and wait for my tooth to heal after surgery, give me some feedback on this topic.  It might be very mid-1990′s scoreboard-ish, but it could possibly bring some life back into this hobby we all love.

Head Scratching Sale of the Day – 1992 Skybox USA David Robinson Autograph

It seems that almost any basketball product that features the Dream Team, specifically the storied dynasty from the early 90′s, will sell worldwide.  Collectors loved that team and it’s players so much, that even if they beat your country, you became a fan.  The first Dream Team autographs to hit the card market were the 1994 Skybox Dream Team Autographs, which didn’t feature anyone better than Isiah Thomas.  They were signed in gold ink, had no card numbers, and didn’t feature any concrete print run.

When I saw this David Robinson 1992 Skybox Autograph card sell yesterday, I was left scratching my head.

What was it and where did it come from?  Why did it sell for so much money, despite not being a pack pulled autograph?  Was there an insert run in 1992 Skybox that was so rare it’s forgotten?

Checking the Beckett checklist draws a blank and I can’t say I’ve ever seen another one on the market.  It is worth noting the sale price and something that Panini America could do as a buy back insert.

Does anyone know what this card is?  Share your info below!
